During the Spring term we were awarded the our third Welsh Network of healthy Schools Award.

Healthy Schools team have now successfully started our ‘Fruit Tuck Shop’ which is run by Class 4. The number of children buying fruit from us is going up every week. There is a wide range of fruit available including  apples, oranges, clememtines, raisins, bananas, grapes, pears and carrots. Additional playground equipment has been purchased over the last few months to encourage the children to remain active at playtimes. The children are encouraged to play with skipping ropes, scoop sets, hula hoops, sponge football and bat and ball sets these are put out on a rota system for playtimes and dinner times.

We have been composting for well over a year and the children keep daily records of how much we are recycling and putting in our compost bins which are situated in the Nature Garden . This is organised and run by Class 3. We are currently looking to expand the composting area and build a bigger stronger container for the waste with the help of the Heritage Coast Rangers. Since the summer term 2007 we have had a paper bank on site, although we were recycling paper long before it arrived. (It was collected by the Vale beforehand). Now the children count and record how many bags of paper are going into the paper bank every week. Before any paper goes for recycling we make sure we use both sides. Since September 2007 we have recycled approximately 3 tonnes of paper. All our cardboard and plastics are also collected and put out for the Vale recycling collections. As  a school we also collect and recycle mobile phones and ink cartridges.

We are currently reading the electric meter at the school and keeping records of these readings. All our computers are set to turn themselves off when not in use and our interactive whiteboards are also turned off when not in use. Most of the lights in the school are on sensors so that they turn themselves off when there is no movement in the room. We have had energy talks in the school to help us understand how we can change the way we currently do things and help the environment.

During the Summer Term we will be starting a litter patrol. This will be the responsibility of Class 2. Once a week put on gloves and walk the school collecting any rubbish that has blown into our grounds.
